TOTAL INVOLVEMENT
Other feat of strength that makes the difference with the other performers : his total involvement in a role, as well physical than mental. Certainly, he’s not the only actor to have accomplished surprising transformations to enter in the skin of a character. I think of Renée Zellwegger, who has accepted to gain weight to play the part of “Bridget Jones”, then to lose the kilos and to take them again. I remember Robert De Niro in “Ragging Bull” and, in the opposite register, Christian Bâle in “The machinist”, whose the tremendous thinness was daily controlled by a staff of doctors and nutritionists. Beautiful example of renouncing ! But Adrien has done more. For « The Pianist », he has not only lost 15 kilos, but he also decided to live in complete isolation to better identify himself to his character. He has cancelled the contract of his apartment, sold his car, left without news his friends and his family, in such a way that numerous fans worried as much about his health as his mental state. In that situation of complete loneliness, he devoted himself to the rendering of Chopin’s works, devoured by hunger, bruised at the deepest of his being by a terrible feeling of neglect. I imagine his state of mind at the moment to initiate the shooting, beginning by the final sequences where his physical disrepair is the most marked and gaining gradually some muscular and moral thickness to play the initial scenes of the movie. Admirable performance and Oscar a hundred times merited !
